Governance and Information

The Society Hill Civic Association ("SHCA") is a member-driven 501(c)(4) nonprofit. The Society Hill Preservation Foundation is a single member 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Together, they work to support the Society Hill neighborhood as defined by the Registered Community Organization with the City of Philadelphia. These documents describe each organization's purpose and how the organization is structured, how members participate in governance and how decisions are made. They are provided here to promote transparency and understanding of how SHCA and SHPF operate.

Articles of Incorporation Society Hill Civic Association

The Articles of Incorporation establish the SHCA and defines its purpose, powers, and legal formation as a member controlled non-profit. SHCA is designated an IRS 501(c)(4) organization which means its focus is on community welfare and can engage in some political activities but does not offer tax-deductible contributions.

The Articles of Incorporation establish the Society Hill Preservation Foundation ("SHPF") and defines its purpose, powers, and legal formation as a Pennsylvania single member nonprofit. The SHCA is the SHPF's sole member. The SHPF is designated as an IRS 501(c)(3) organization which means its primary purpose is charitable and contributions to it are tax-deductible.

Registered Community Organization (RCO) Boundary Map

This map shows the geographic boundaries within which SHCA operates as a Registered Community Organization with the City of Philadelphia. As a Registered Community Organization SHCA participates in zoning variance and special exception requests made by property owners within the area that Philadelphia Planning Commission designates for the SHCA.
