Here is a listing of the standing SHCA Committees:

Zoning And Historic Preservation

The committee advocates for the preservation and restoration of Society Hill’s historic buildings and pursues the community’s interest concerning zoning issues. It entertains presentations from developers, monitors residential and commercial applications for zoning variances and reports to the Board on issues that affect the historic integrity of Society Hill.

Finance

The committee monitors the SHCA finances and administers its operating budget.

Legal

The committee provides legal advice to the SHCA Officers and its Board of Directors.

Safe and Sound

The committee deals with traffic, trash, crime and quality of life issues. It informs residents of any criminal incidents in Society Hill through a weekly crime report and collaborates with the 6th District Police.

Membership

The committee works to increase membership in the SHCA.

Nominating And Elections

The committee handles the nomination and election process for the annual election of the SHCA Officers and Directors held in May of each year.

Communications and Outreach

The committee acts to promote and inform membership regarding the activities of the SHCA.

Clean and Beautiful

  • Washington Square: Works with the Independence National Historical Park (INHP) to aid in the beautification of Washington Square through the planting of flowers and new shrubbery.
  • Clean-Up Days: Organizes spring and fall neighborhood clean-up days.
  • Tree Tending: A subsidy program for tree maintenance, removal, and new plantings. The committee also works with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to provide free street trees when available.
  • “Fix the Brix”: A subsidy program to assist homeowners to repair their brick sidewalks.

Foglietta Plaza

The committee seeks to develop and implement a redesign of Foglietta Plaza at Front and Spruce Streets.

Grants

If funds are available, the committee solicits requests and awards grants to organizations that have programs or projects that will serve the mission of SHCA.

Headhouse and Shambles

The committee works to improve the condition and public accessibility of the historic Headhouse and Shambles.

McCall School

The committee collaborates with McCall School and administers donations from SHCA members earmarked for the school.

South Street Reimagined

The committee supports the efforts to improve South Street.
